Rehabilitation is the process that people undergo after illness or an injury. It can be used to rebuild skills and confidence in doing everyday activities while highlighting the importance of caring for the whole person – mind, body and spirit.
There are various ways that this process can take place, but all include a program which focuses on the best way to speed up recovery, get fitter and stronger or avoid any injuries.
We offer a warm and supportive environment for anyone going through the rehabilitation process, and we’d like to share some stories with you about our most inspirational members:
• Myra Laming who lives at Sweet Hill on Portland has benefited from the one-to-one consultations and use of the Spa’s facilities. Mira suffers from MS which has seriously reduced the strength in her legs making it difficult for her to walk and live independently. Mike Young, Fitness Suite and Swimming Pool Manager, has been taking Myra twice a week through a fitness programme since June 2010. She works with weights and has recently, with Mike’s encouragement, had the confidence to take to the treadmill. “Mike is excellent! Going to The Ocean Spa has put a whole new aspect on my life. Previously I travelled to Sturminster Newton for treatment so being able to get to The Ocean Spa by myself has given me my independence and made a world of difference to me. Mike’s professional dedication and caring approach makes me even more determined to be more mobile and build the strength in my legs.”
• Peter Bower from Portland became a member last year. Peter was knocked off his motorbike by a car on the Portland Beach Road in August 2009. After many operations and a long stay in hospital he took the difficult decision to have his leg amputated below the right knee. Since then he hasn’t looked back and is determined to return to leading a normal life. Peter explains, “Initially I travelled to Winterbourne Hospital, near Dorchester, for rehabilitation treatment and to use the therapy pool there. I was delighted when I discovered I had expert help and even better facilities on my doorstep at The Ocean Spa. Over the last few months I’ve been treated by Debbie Tennant, the Spa’s Physiotherapist, and used the fantastic indoor heated swimming pool on a regular basis. I’ve come a long way and am now determined to walk without my walking stick within weeks.”
If you think you might benefit from rehabilitation treatment or know someone else that could, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You could soon be embarking on a program tailored to your needs.
